Hypersonic nozzle for laser-spectroscopy studies at 17 K characterized by resonance-ionization-spectroscopy-based flow mapping

The in-gas-jet laser spectroscopy method relies on the production of uniform and low-temperature gas jets to fully resolve atomic hyperfine structure efficiently determine fundamental nuclear properties short-lived isotopes from, e.g., hardly accessible actinide transactinide elements. In this article we present studies devoted designing, producing, characterizing flow a convergent-divergent (de Laval) hypersonic nozzle with superior performance for applications. A novel mapping technique, based resonance ionization (RIS), has been employed characterize local an argon jet formed by nozzle, revealing 61.5-mm long, highly collimated at low temperature 16.6(5) K [Mach 8.11(12)] that will enable experiments heavy-exotic nuclei unprecedented spectral resolution high efficiency. These results have compared those obtained planar induced fluorescence (PLIFS) show good agreement between two techniques significant improvement in efficiency RIS respect PLIFS. data are state-of-the-art fluid-dynamics calculations were carried out obtain contour simulate its performance, as well explain observation possible onset nucleation.
